Inmates are permitted to send and receive unlimited correspondence. The only exception is when there is reasonable cause to justify limitations for reasons of public safety or facility order, or to prevent violation of state or federal law. All incoming/outgoing mail is subject to search prior to being delivered.
Acceptable mail items:
- Money Orders must be made payable to the Orange County Sheriff's Department, with the inmate's name and booking number annotated on the reference line of the money order
- Magazines must be mailed or sent by the publisher
- Photographs (no larger than 8x10) and may not contain nudity or be sexually suggestive
- No more than 10 pages of photocopied/reproduced or printed material, including photographs
- New paperback books must be mailed or sent directly by the publisher or an accepted distributer (i.e. Amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, costco.com, walmart.com, etc.). Inmates may only possess a maximum of 5 books or magazines
Unacceptable mail items:
- Addressee not in custody at any of our facilities
- Mail which does NOT contain a return address
- Items which cannot be inspected by normal means or without damaging the item, i.e. multilayered cards, photographs, laminated items
- Items containing foil or metal of any type, glass, wood, hard plastic, rubber, glue, perfume, or other prohibited substances
- Maps, travel brochures, wall calendars, wall posters, or catalogs
- Credit cards or personal checkbooks
- Any food item
- Any article of clothing, hygiene item or other personal property
- Personal checks/Payroll checks
- Padded envelopes
- Hard cover books or used paperback books
- Writing paper, pencils, envelopes and stamps (These items can be purchased through Commissary. Stamps and envelopes only may be ordered from USPS.COM and shipped directly to an inmate)
- Any package or any envelopes larger than 9"x12"
